About us

Hello and welcome to Mijas, a "pueblo blanco" on Costa del Sol, near Fuengirola, in a marvellous position between mountains and Mediterranean. Mijas is also the home of the MIJAS ARTS CENTRE (CENTRO DE ARTES DE MIJAS) which you are now visiting on the web, and which we hope you will soon visit in person.

We are an international centre for the promotion and development of the arts amongst the local and expatriate communities, and we provide a relaxed environment in which people of all ages can acquire new skills, improve existing ones and make new friends.

The Centro de Artes has been in existence for over 30 years, having initially been established by a group of altruistic expatriates. Their intention was to provide the children of Mijas Pueblo with the facilities to experience artistic and creative activities, free of charge. Fortunately, times change, and gradually schools began to offer more opportunities, so the Centro became less essential for children. However, it was becoming apparent that  adults were looking for similar facilities, and the centre gradually evolved and modified its provision. We now have students from a wide range of age, ability and nationality.

Currently the centre is able to offer the following courses:
Painting and Drawing - Water colour, oils, gouache, acrylic, pencil, pastel, charcoal.  Life Drawing class.
Ceramics
Sculpture
Spanish - Beginners, Intermediate and Conversation.
Children´s creative Crafts
Plus occasional short courses on subjects such as hand sewing, tile painting, fabric painting.....furthermore, if you have an interest in developing another skill, we will do our very best to accommodate You.

The Painting and Sculpture teachers are professional artists, producing work which they regularly exhibit both here in Spain and in the UK.

Outings to lesser known parts of beautiful Andalucia; visits to Exhibitions and social events are also part of our programme which, along with the various classes, are available to members and non-members (but the latter will have to pay rather more to participate!).

THE CENTRO DE ARTES is self-financing and non profit making, relying on membership subscriptions and volunteer workers for the day to day organisation of the centre and the maintenance of the building, (which is, incidentally, right in the centre of Mijas, overlooking the Plaza).

Wherever you are visiting along the Costa del Sol you will always find a trip to Mijas available, with departure from as far as Nerja in the NE and Gibraltar in the SW.... and when you get to Mijas, please call in and see us. If you are staying nearby, when you get bored with beach, come and be creative for a couple of sessions. Look at our programme and we are certain you will find something to interest you.
